First founded by Adolf Dassler in his mother’s home in Germany, Adidas began under the name Dassler Brothers Shoe Company. Adolf and his brother, Rudolf, started producing spiked running shoes for athletic events in 1924. The Dassler brothers were the first to transition from metal to rubber spikes on the shoes, allowing athletes to move quickly without compromising their shoe grip. In 1936, Adolf convinced Olympic athlete Jesse Owens to wear his shoes for the Summer Olympics–Owens took home four gold medals, and the reputation of Dassler shoes skyrocketed. The Dassler Brothers Shoe Company became known to athletes and sports brands alike worldwide, and the business’s sales experienced a major uptick until World War II.
In 1947, the Dassler brothers split, a rift that would be ultimately irreparable. Adolf formally registered the shoe company under the name Adidas, and Rudolf in turn founded a new company: Puma, another sports shoe company that would become a major rival to Adidas. The two brothers and their companies would compete throughout the rest of their lives, though both succeeded in creating lasting brands and profitable businesses still in existence today.
Following the 1952 Olympics, Adidas bought its signature three-stripe logo from a Finnish footwear brand for two bottles of whiskey and approximately 1600 euros. This branding was so enthusiastically adopted that Adolf came to refer to Adidas as “the three-stripe company”, and the parallel lines were integrated into both actual shoe design and various logo adaptations, as well as longstanding Adidas marketing strategies. Today, Adidas still utilizes their three-stripe legacy in both their athletic and lifestyle product lines.
